Why Provenance Is Required
Generative work is routinely published with no account of where its material came from. Signal refuses that. The provenance document is mandatory, is checked for placeholders, and is hashed into the launch record.
What it must contain#
- · At least two specific statements of what the frequency does not claim to be.
- · Every data or sample source, with origin, license, and a SHA-256 where a file is involved.
- · Sample clearance, stated plainly wherever copyrighted recordings are present.
- · Citations as DOIs, ISBNs, or links; never prose.
- · A two-column table separating sourced data from the creator's own design choices.
- · The license of the step-function code.
Why the two-column table matters#
It is the part that cannot be faked casually. It forces the creator to say which parts of the result come from the source material and which are their own decisions; the same distinction that determines what, if anything, is theirs to claim.
